A Letter by Andrew Leith-Hay to his Father from Madrid, Dated 22 May 1813

Author: Andrew Leith-Hay
Recipient: His father, General Alexander Leith-Hay
Date: 22 May 1813
Place: Madrid, Spain
Written from Madrid on 22 May 1813, this letter carries Andrew Leith-Hay’s news to his father that he had been taken prisoner while on service near Toledo during the Peninsular War. He describes moving each night to stay clear of the enemy before being surprised at a village three leagues from Toledo, and asks his family to take his capture as one of the fortunes of war. He was later released in a prisoner exchange — an episode also referred to on his biography page.
