BEFORE LEITH HALL
Origins in Medieval Aberdeen
The earlier documentary evidence on the Leith name appearance in Scotland and the family’s link to Aberdeen reaches into the 1320s, while the securely documented provost line begins in 1351. William Leith of Barns and Ruthrieston served as Provost of Aberdeen from 1351–56 and again in the 1370s.
His son Laurence de Leith held the civic chair from 1401 to 1404 and is recorded again in 1411. These medieval Aberdeen records are the first records of the family in the North East Scotland.
