A family album photograph, taken about 1907, shows Jean Leith-Hay, Mrs George Leith-Hay (née Allen), and Doreen Leith-Hay. Jean was the elder daughter of George Leslie Leith-Hay, the younger brother of Charles Edward Norman Leith-Hay. George was a wine merchant and lived mainly in London.
Jean and her younger sister Doreen, then about four or five years old, both appear in the family signatures held in the archive.
Jean spent much of her adult life in Marlborough, Wiltshire, where she founded and ran the Polly Tea Rooms with her partner Janet Mcloud, a suffragette Doreen married Edward Hegarty in 1925 and had one child, Elizabeth Ann Hegarty, later Edwards, from her marriage in 1958. Elizabeth died in West Somerset in 1997. Doreen later married a former RAF Squadron leader and died as Doreen Hay-Will.
